Milton and Carol Schilde started the business in August 1975 after returning from a tour with the Peace Corps where they spent 2 1/2 years in the Philippine Islands with their 3 children.
The business was operated as an orchard and cider mill in the early phase but quickly added farm produce and fruits seasonally.
Greenhouses were added in the early 1980's and have continued to bloom and grow until the present day. Large, state of the art top-vented houses produce quality plant growing conditions and out-of-the-ordinary plants each spring. We grow our own plants. Our plants are tended with TLC from seed to sale..they are personally planted and attended by the Schilde family, who take pride in the final product that brings people from near and far to find just what they were looking for to fill their gardens and patios!
Each summer, the Schildes travel down to southern Pennsylvania to bring back luscious Pennsylvania peaches and produce for canning and enjoying. They are right from the farm to you. The tradition was started to provide early fruit to the area since our harvest in upstate NY is a month later than the harvest in Pennsylvania. We continue this tradition because it works!
Apple season has been the foundation for the family business as Milt's parents owned Sharon Orchards, the original family orchard. We continue to have a full selection of apples and cider from the family farm.
As the family has grown and expanded Milton and Carol Schilde frequently act as agricultural advisors in the WinRock program...part of the US AID program...and travel to developing countries to consult on agricultrual programs .
Presently Tom and Laurie are representing the next generation of Schildes to carry on the Sunnycrest traditions. The third generation can be found there on weekends and summer breaks!
